In the game, you will build your very own crew of pirates and characters from the One Piece universe. You start the game with a weak Dinghy ship, which you will never use after the first few missions. After completing Syrup Village, you'll get a much better Merry Go which will serve you for a good while. After clearing Tower of Law ~ Gates of Justice you'll get a 100% improvement, Thousand Sunny, which you should immediately switch to. The last story-mode ship you will get is the Thousand Sunny Coated Vessel which you get after completing the Sabaody Archipelago Redux. It is however not another improvement - it's about as good as the previous Sunny, sometimes more, sometimes less useful.
There is also a small chance of obtaining these characters from Friend Point Poll. One of the best ways to increase your pirate level is to farm fortnights. This is where all the juicy stuff will be and where you will be doing the majority of your farming. You can keep completing story at your own pace, but plan to use the majority of your stamina in Extra Island. Remember to use units that will get buffed by the captain ability. With Story Luffy, all units get buffs but STR units will get a higher buff. So having a team with more STR units, even with lower attack than some of your non STR units, can do more damage.
Now, I won't go into details on beating this raid, as there is a whole guide on it. But once you obtain Mihawk and evolve and sufficiently level him, you will find that this game will get much easier and story can be easily progressed up to a certain point. Not only that, but Mihawk is beatable with F2P units without using a Zombie Team.
